Sonoyta storms cause significant damage

Storm damage of family housing

At about 4:30 PM on a rainy August 24 afternoon, two storm fronts collided in Sonoyta. Rain poured down accompanied by severe winds, creating damage all over Sonoyta. We weren’t spared! Nine of our new family rooms at Huellas (new property just down the street) lost their roofs, insulation and sheet rock. Luckily Aaron ad Karla were there quickly and, since our resident numbers are down a bit, we were able to temporarily relocate all families to new locations on site. Other than one minor injury, everyone is safe and dry and in good, tho subdued, spirits. 60 power poles are down around town but our power was fairly steady since new concrete poles had been installed on our street corner. (We were worried, of course, about our refrigerators full of food!)

Most of the beams and metal roofing were broken or twisted and, of course, the sheet rock and insulation will all need to be replaced. We aren’t sure if the mattresses (27) will dry successfully. Shoes, clothes and personal items are drying everywhere!

This storm came so unexpectedly that it will take time to develop a restoration plan and effort to find materials for repairs. We have contacted the city, state and office of migration for help in some way. We should have some answers by Monday.

We will be putting out a “Disaster Relief” funding request by Monday after we calculate what we will need to put things back together.

Thank you all for your very sweet notes and wishes for our speedy recovery and all of your financial support that allows this very special project to continue. We never know what’s next, but the spirit of our guests sheds a bright light over this unfortunate event.

Thank you all from Arlene, John and everyone at Centro!

How YOU Can Help

For families seeking asylum, Centro de Esperanza continues to provide three meals a day, clothing, hygiene products, medical care, information on asylum, weekly activities, and educational opportunities for both children and adults.  Our mission is to maintain a safe place for families in need.  As the landscape of U.S. immigration continues to be volatile, there will be new opportunities to use your talents. Meanwhile, your dollars keep families cared for and safe.
